“My income is zero”: Aniket Mahata released from 'bond posting' after 5-month wait

Junior doctor Aniket Mahata, one of the prominent faces of the RG Kar movement, has been released from his bond posting by the state Health Department after completing the required formalities and depositing the prescribed bond amount. According to Aniket, he paid ₹30 lakh on May 25 and was officially released from the bond obligations on June 6 after waiting several months for the order to be issued.

Sharing the development on social media, Aniket said he had announced his decision to resign from his Senior Resident posting on January 2. He stated that the decision was not merely personal and was supported by several well-wishers and participants associated with the movement. He also said that he was aware the move would effectively end any opportunity for him to continue practicing medicine within the government healthcare system.

Aniket explained that the ₹30 lakh bond amount required to leave the posting was beyond his financial capacity and that he had sought assistance from supporters. He stated that contributions from well-wishers enabled him to raise the entire amount needed to fulfill the bond requirement and complete the necessary procedures for release.

According to Aniket, despite completing all official formalities immediately after announcing his intention to leave the posting, the release order was not issued for nearly five months. He stated that the required bond amount was eventually deposited following instructions from the Health Department, after which the authorities processed his release from the bond obligations.

In his statement, Aniket also spoke about the financial difficulties he experienced during the period. He said that his income had been virtually nonexistent for almost twelve months and described the release as the end of a prolonged administrative process that began after his decision to step away from the government medical service.
